A MUST Read for all children before using the Internet!

Here are 5 guidelines you should follow when using the Internet and Chat rooms

  1. Never give anyone any details that could be used to physically find you, such as your real name, address, phone number, school name and friend’s name.
  2. If something appears on your screen, and you find it disturbing, you should let your parents, teacher or friends know.Do not respond to anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.
  3. Remember not everything you read in chat rooms is true and people may not be as honest as you are.
  4. Let your parents know when you have made a new friend online. If you want to meet this new person face-to-face, you must let your parents or another responsible adult know that you have organised to meet someone.
  5. Always have a responsible adult present if you fill out any online forms, and never go into an area that asks for your personal details or a credit card.

Hints on how to help protect your children when they are using the Internet

There are a number of ways that you can make your internet connection safer for your children.

  • Talk to your kids; let them know about the dangers of chat rooms and some web sites.
  • Supervise your children whilst they are online. Sitting with or near your children make them less likely to visit adult sites and chat rooms.
  • Help your child choose their ‘screen name’, email address or instant messaging name wisely.
  • Check your browser history, Internet Explorer has a small button on the toolbar which looks like a tiny clock with a green arrow over the top. By clicking on it you can see up to 1 month of websites that have been visited by your browser.
